BLUE GARLIC

Blue Garlic: For the Love of Pickling

Did you know that garlic turns blue when pickled? At ECS, we definitely did NOT know this fact, until we began working with Blue Garlic, a Toronto-based pickling start-up.

While you can pickle cucumbers, carrots, onions, olives, peppers, peaches...

really, anything, the fact that garlic changes into this vibrant blue/teal

colour is too hard to ignore, especially when designing a brand new logo

and jar labels

Although blue is known as the least appetizing colour, the teal shade

mixed with the beige background and chosen illustrations prompts an

old-time feel, one that we wanted to trigger, since pickling is a practice

that has been around for centuries. The Blue Garlic imagery looked

to also trigger that 'old-time feel', and bring pickling back to basics.

Depending on the main subject being pickled, there are a number of

ingredients that can be used throughout the pickling process, but garlic is certainly a common one.

Dill, while specifically used in dill pickles, can also be seen in a number of North American and European pickling recipes, and is one of the reasons why the Blue Garlic logo is decorated with stems of dill. Finally, mason jars are known for their sealing properties, and are almost instinctively known for pickling and preservatives. See below for the finalized Blue Garlic logos!
